True Friend

1 Samuel 20:16–17 (NLT): 16 So Jonathan made a solemn pact with David, saying, “May the Lord destroy all your enemies!” 17 And Jonathan made David reaffirm his vow of friendship again, for Jonathan loved David as he loved himself.

Matthew 22:34–40 (NLT): The Most Important Commandment

34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees with his reply, they met together to question him again. 35 One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?”

37 Jesus replied, “ ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”

Of all the relationships to start with, Editor would probably not be my first choice. True Friend, might make the top of the list though.

I love stories, and sometimes the more fantastic they are the better. It doesn’t matter if they are fact or fiction to me because some of the best fiction stories were created from a kernel of truth. One of the things I have learned from stories over the years is that many villains are created when they do not have or lose a True Friend. Consider these examples.

  1. The Grinch
  2. Darth Vader
  3. Ebenezer Scrooge
  4. Scar
  5. Loki

Those who play the anti-hero are often held in a point of conflict around a relationship of a true friend.

It is important to have a True Friend in your life. So important, in fact, that God commands us to be true friends in the Greatest Commandments. David and Jonathan represent one example, among several others in the bible, such as Ruth and Naomi. Jesus both commanded His disciples to love one another as True Friends and laid His own life down as an example to them. It is one of the most important themes throughout the entire bible and demonstrates what it means to be a child of God.

  • Who is your true friend?
  • Are you a true friend to someone who is not a true friend back to you?
  • To whom is God calling you to be a new true friend?

We will walk with each other

We will walk hand in hand
